The short version
Three small cookies keep the site working. Ads pay for the site and set cookies too, but they're matched to the page you're on, not to you, and nothing follows you to other websites.
Analytics only runs if you say yes. If you say no, or change your mind later, we don't just stop, we delete the ones already in your browser.
Cookies that are always set
These keep the site working and there is no way to turn them off while using it. None of them identify you, and none are shared for advertising.

Advertising cookies: set for everyone
This is the part most cookie policies get wrong, so it's worth being direct: advertising cookies are set whether or not you consent.
Ads pay for the site, and they are matched to the page you are reading rather than to you. Nothing about your visit is used to build a profile, nothing follows you to other websites, and there is no remarketing. Under US state privacy laws that is neither a sale nor a sharing of your personal information, which is why it doesn't wait for consent.
What consent changes is whether ads may be personalised: that is, chosen using information about you rather than about the page. Personalisation is currently switched off site-wide for everyone regardless of what they chose.

Analytics cookies: only if you agree
Analytics tells us which pages get used so we know what to improve. The script is not loaded at all unless you agree, so if you decline, these cookies never exist for you, there is nothing sitting dormant.
We have turned off every advertising feature in Google Analytics. Your analytics data is not used to target ads, build audiences, or identify you, and it is deleted after two months.

Changing your mind
You can change your choice at any time using Cookie settings at the bottom of any page, or here: .
When you withdraw consent, we delete the cookies already in your browser , we don't only stop setting new ones. Most sites leave the old identifiers in place, which means withdrawing does less than it sounds like. We remove the Google analytics and advertising cookies listed above.
One limit worth stating: we can only delete cookies stored under our own domain. Cookies set by other companies on their own domains are beyond our reach, which is part of why ads here are contextual, it keeps that set small.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the necessary ones, parts of the site will stop working properly.
Global Privacy Control
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a valid opt-out request rather than a suggestion. Analytics is switched off, personalisation is switched off, and any analytics or advertising cookies already in your browser are deleted. You do not need to do anything else, and the “Do Not Sell or Share” link in the footer will tell you it has already been applied.
Firefox, Brave and DuckDuckGo send this signal by default; Chrome supports it through an extension.
